Princess Cake Skirt {Tutorial}

I had so much fun making Navi’s princess cake that I thought I would share a simple tutorial on how to do it! The best thing about this cake is that it’s super quick and easy and can be customized to go with your party!

The cake part was my twist on a cake a found on Pinterest. Bird on a Cake gives a great tutorial on how to make the frosting “petals”. It’s actually a lot easier than it looks! Give it a try! Her cake was all white, but I wanted Navi’s to be pink (per her request) and decided on a whim to add the yellow in for a little more interest.

I also saw a “tulle cake stand” on Pinterest here. I fell in love and knew it would be perfect for Navi’s princess cake!

First, you will need a cake stand. Any old cake stand will do since it will be covered with tulle (and the cake). I wanted my cake to sit up a bit higher than it would by itself so I simply found a bowl and turned it upside down. Then I took the cake stand and taped it onto the bowl with clear packing tape.

Then it’s time to attach the tulle. I used four different colors of tulle; a light and dark pink and a light and dark creamy yellow (1/2 yard of each color), so a total of 2 yards of tulle. If you want the skirt to be fuller, simply add more tulle!

Cut your tulle into about 10 inch wide strips. The length of your piece will depend on how tall your cake stand is. Just make sure it’s long enough to hang down and hide the cake stand. My initial length before folding it over was 19 inches.

Then, fold the top of your piece over but not quite in half. I folded about 1/3 of the way down. You want to make another layer of tulle without having to cut another piece. Make sense?

Then you will gather the top together with you fingers. You want your sections to be bunched together at the top … this will create the “skirt look”. If you skip this step it will just look like flat pieces of tulle hanging from your cake. No bueno!

Once you have a section gathered, you simply tape it to the top edge of your cake stand. Then start over with a new piece of tulle and keep going around the cake stand until it is full. Make sure to slightly overlap each piece to keep your skirt nice and full!

This is what the top of your cake stand will look like once you have finished taping all the tulle on. (FYI – I used strong packing tape to be sure that curious little fingers didn’t pull the skirt off while oohing and aahhing!)

Once all the tulle is taped on and secure your skirt is done! Instead of putting the cake directly on the tape and tulle, I placed a round cardboard cake plate down and then the cake on top. You can find pre cut round cake boards at Wal–mart or JoAnn’s or most party stores. Or you can do like I did and cut one out of a piece of cardboard.

After frosting the cake I finished it off with a crown a few wand candles! This is for sure up there as one of my all time favorite cakes! So cute and easy!!

I thinks it’s safe to say that it was a hit with the princess! You can’t beat that smile!

Now, go get your cake on!

Navi’s Three!

Today my baby turns three. I have found myself unexpectedly emotional. Probably because she IS and always will be our baby. She is our last and even though I feel like our family is complete I will always miss those first days, weeks, and months of my babies lives! I look back at her newborn pictures and wonder where the time has gone? Those days seem like a blur. I am so grateful for pictures to remind me of that sweet, innocent time.

And now…three years old! She is all girl (for the most part) and I love it! Happy birthday to my beautiful, smart, loving, sassy princess!

We had her party last night and what could more fitting for the little miss than a princess cake? She loved it and that’s all I can ask for!

Snake Party

Over the weekend we celebrated G’s sixth birthday! After much deliberation he went with a snake theme … which I was not going to complain about considering his other ideas were Power Rangers and Ninjago. (I’m so over the character themed stuff these days!) So when he threw the snake idea out there I totally jumped all over it and went to town.

I knew I wanted a fun backdrop for the party table without spending a ton of mula, so I grabbed the biggest frame that I had laying around (if you don’t have anything this size I found mine at the DI, or you could even just use a piece of foam core board) and covered the print with wrapping paper. (It’s just temporary so the print can be used again.) Then I had one of my favorite pictures of him printed in a 16x20 ($5.99 at Costco) and layered it over the wrapping paper. A simple banner and a few small pinwheels give it the finished look that I was going for without distracting too much from the picture.

I personalized the party favors by putting each of the kids initials on the bags. It was nice so there was no confusion once they were handed out of whose was whose.

I found this idea on pinterest  and thought the kids would love it.  It’s simply plastic snakes in different colored Jell-O. It was definitely a hit with the kids and added a bit of whimsy to the table.

The snake cake was my favorite part. Don’t look too close at his nose though … I didn’t get a shot before my D got a finger full of frosting! :)

I went back and forth on whether to use fondant or buttercream for the frosting, and even though I love the look of fondant, I don’t love the taste … so buttercream it was!

All in all it was a great party for an awesome little boy whom I can not believe is already six!

I just love planning parties! What about you? Have you done any fun parties this summer? Please do share … I would love to hear!

Wanna–Be Cake Maker {Mario Bothers STAR Cake}

I wasn’t kidding when I said this cake was the easiest cake ever. It was just a simple star pan and a couple of big black eyes!

IMG_20120714_123515

I made this one for my best friends little guy. (Love him!) She made the cutest toad cupcakes to go along with the Mario theme. They were a huge hit with the kids but of coarse I didn’t get any pictures.

On a totally unrelated to cakes note, I am crossing my fingers that I can finish up the cabinet project that I have been working on this weekend. I have a bit of a time management problem … I don’t know, maybe it has to do with the fact that I have four little ones to tend to!?!

I am dying to show you the before and after’s though … so I guess I better put on my work pants and get er done!

Wanna - Be Cake Maker

Do you want to know a little secret about me?

I am a wanna be cake maker. For real.

I love making my kids fun cakes on their birthdays. I have made everything from a stegosaurus to a pink bunny and pretty much everything in between, I have even been known to make a naughty cake or two (not for my kids birthdays though)!

So I thought it would be fun to show you guys my very very basic cake making skills by featuring one of my cakes here and there. Yes? Yes!

Remember last week when I told you that I got to make my nephews cake for his first birthday? Well, here it is!

IMG_20120705_184341

I had so much fun doing this one and thought it turned out pretty good, despite the fact that I didn’t have my usual supplies and it was basically melting in the Las Vegas heat (that’s why it looks so shiny).

IMG_20120705_184110

Are you wondering why a one year old needs seven candles? My other nephew was turning seven later on that week so we turned it into sort of a double party on a whim. I think he was ok with that!

IMG_20120705_184358

And of coarse every one year old needs their very own cake to smash, right?

 IMG_20120705_192623

Wrong.

He hated it, wanted nothing to do with it, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t even taste it!

I forgive you buddy!

My little G is turning six in a few weeks and has requested a Ninjago cake. Ummm … ok. Any suggestions? I’ll be sure to keep you updated with what I come up with, but in the mean time I’ve got a Super Mario Brothers star cake to show ya soon! (Easiest cake I have EVER made!)
